These missionaries have given up family, friends, homes, and the many comforts of America to meet the very physical and spiritual needs of others around the world. Because of the all-consuming nature of the task, burnout is a real concern. The preventable loss of missionaries is very concerning. According to a study, the number of missionaries leaving the field for preventable reasons has increased over the past 20 years. (1.69% per year during the period from 1981-1985 versus 2.17% per year during the period from 1995-2000.) Lack of finances and support were the number one factors.
